Why Do We Celebrate Good Friday?

On Good Friday, we celebrate Jesus’ death on the cross for sinners.

Why is it “good”?

1) We are the sinners that Jesus died to save–everyone who believes! (John 3:16).

2) Three days after he died, Jesus rose again and defeated death forever! (1 Cor. 15:55-57).

This Good Friday (3/29) we’ll gather as a church at 7pm to worship– to remember, celebrate, give thanks, and to pray–bringing our own sorrows to the Man of sorrows who became sin for us. Jesus was tempted as we are, yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15). He is both the Great High Priest, and the only perfect sacrifice for sinners. Because of his suffering, Jesus can sympathize with us in our weakness. He invites you to come in weakness and receive his mercy.

Will you join us as we gather on Good Friday to seek God’s mercy? We will look to him in his Word as we hear from portions of Hebrews. We’ll respond together in song and in prayer–calling out to God for ourselves and our neighbors. Come and bring your sorrows to Jesus. He will take them! But we do not merely lament to Jesus, we lament with him. Read Psalm 22–this was Jesus’ prayer as he hung on the cross– “My God, my God. Why have you forsaken me?” Jesus suffered and died willingly. He died to give joy, forgiveness, life, and peace to all who come to him. Will you join us this Good Friday as we worship the perfect Savior? Come lift up your sorrows! He will listen.

“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16 ESV).

Listen to this song to help prepare your hearts for the Good Friday service!
