As you read this, please keep the following in mind. First, note the italicized word- consistently. Think regularly, a pattern, a way of life. Second, there are legitimate reasons one might consistently have to miss church. The key words in the previous sentence are the words have to miss.  Those who have to miss church, really miss it. Make sense?

So, just what do you miss when you consistently miss congregational worship?

  • You miss the joy of gathering with the family of God. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, Ephesians 2:19
  • You miss the blessing of giving and receiving encouragement.  And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.                          Hebrews 10:24-25
  • You miss the opportunity for growth in faith through the preaching of God’s Word. So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17
  • You miss  singing songs that fuel your faith. Oh sing to the Lord a new song;
     sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.
    Psalm 96:1-2
  • You miss participation in the Lord’s Supper. Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Matthew 26:26-28
  • You miss the public reading of God’s Word. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 1 Timothy 4:13
  • You miss the blessing that comes from linking arms with brothers and sisters in Christ to serve in the church and in the community. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace. 1 Peter 4:10
  • You miss the fellowship of God’s people. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:7
  • You miss the opportunity to both share and shoulder burdens. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2
  • You miss the blessing that comes through accountability and prayer. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. James 5:16
