On Thursday, February 25, The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Equality Act by a vote of 224 to 206 and the bill has now moved on to the Senate, one step closer to President Biden’s desk.
The Equality Act amends the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. In brief, the Equality Act that was just passed by The House, would penalize Americans who believe marriage is between a man and a woman and believe people are born either male or female.
I have read the bill so that I am not going off what others say, and I find it very troubling. I hope you will take a few minutes to read it here and see if you do not agree. Carefully read SEC. 4. Desegregation of Public Facilities; SEC. 5. Desegregation of Public Education, SEC. 1101. Definitions and Rules. (2) Gender Identity.
For a shorter but very informative read, see Focus on the Family President Jim Daly’s article here. Daly wrote this article nearly one year ago but now the playing field has dramatically changed. The Equality Act has the full support of the President.
The wording, Equality Act, sounds safe but the bill is laced with danger. I urge you to contact Senator Jon Ossoff and Senator Raphael Warnock to express your opposition to the Equality Act. You can contact them here. May I plead with you to resist saying, “What good would that do?” As a Christian citizen, you and I have a responsibility to respectfully voice our opposition to the Equality Act.
On the other hand, what we see proposed in this bill only reminds us of the biblical teachings concerning the fact that Christians should not expect the world to embrace our values. Yet, we are still given the tasks of being salt and light in a tasteless and dark world.
Having informed yourself and hopefully made your voice heard, please make this a matter of prayer. It will take 60 votes in the Senate for H. R. 5 to make it to President Biden’s desk. Let us pray that members on both sides of the aisle will consider the implications of this bill and vote to defeat it.
Ed Stetzer, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Billy Graham Center for Evangelism has sounded the warning we dare not ignore, “The Equality Act is the most serious threat to religious liberty in a generation.”
Brothers and sisters, please inform others in your family and circle of friends of this threat and urge them to contact their Senators voicing the opposition.
Encourage your family and friends who are Christians to pray for the defeat of the Equality Act.
